Yahoo IM Worm Hijacks Browsers, Plays Migraine Music

Beware, There is a worm running through Yahoo’s instant messaging network is installing a browser of its own — a first for IM malware — that leads users to adware and spyware sites, several security firms said Monday.

The worm, dubbed "Yhoo32.explr" by IM security vendor FaceTime Communications on Friday and "Browaf" by Symantec on Monday, is installed when Yahoo users click on a malicious link embedded within an instant message.

Yhoo32.explr downloads and installed the so-called "Safety Browser," which adds an IE-like icon to the desktop, and when used, takes the unsuspecting to sites where their PCs are infected with adware and spyware. The worm also changes the home page of IE to point to Safety Browser’s site.

To complicate things, Safety Browser doesn’t post an Uninstall option in Windows’ Add or Remove Programs Control Panel applet.

"This is the first instance of a complete web browser hijack without the user’s awareness. Similar ‘rogue’ browsers, such as ‘Yapbrowser’, have demonstrated the potential for serious damage by directing end-users to potentially illegal or illicit material. ‘Rogue’ browsers seem to be the hot new thing among hackers."

Along with the bogus browser, the worm makes the PC blare out screeching music thick with bad guitar licks and drum solos. The headache-inducing noise plays every time the computer boots or Safety Browser launches.

Anti-virus vendors, such as Symantec, are working on signatures to detect the new Yahoo IM worm; FaceTime said that has already it updated its customers’ software.

Tens of thousands of students representing countries in every corner of the world have stepped up to the Imagine Cup 2006 Challenge and now the results are in! After several months of competition over two rounds, the list of worldwide finalists has been determined and will assemble to compete for the title of world champion in their respective invitational later this year in India.

Students competed against their peers in six invitationals designed to challenge even the sharpest technical minds. Those categories include Software Design, Algorithm, Interface Design, IT, Short Film, and Project Hoshimi. Finalists from each category will square off before a panel of judges in Delhi, India, to showcase their work. This year’s theme challenged the world’s top young minds to "Imagine a world where technology enables us to live healthier lives."

There are six finalists in the Algorithm category where students put their problem solving skills to the test. The finalists include pmnox/Poland, Grey/Russia, Psyho/Poland, Nudelbrotsuppe/Germany, TPReal/Poland, and r1cs1/Hungary. For these lucky few the competition will consist of a 24-hour onsite challenge against a series of very difficult problems to determine the global champion.

Short Film competitors participated as a team. A total of six teams will travel to India and will also compete in a 24-hour filmmaking challenge. The top eight teams are Team Forest/Canada, Team Echo/United States, Team Skylined/Poland, Team LDLC/United States, Team Saint/Taiwan, and Team Ottomans/Turkey.
